The history of Smoke Hole Caverns is tied to the Seneca Indians who used the front section of the caverns to smoke wild game. The slow-burning wood fires sent clouds of smoke swirling out into the valley. The scene was so common that early settlers called the place Smoke Hole.
The many rooms and secluded nature of the Caverns were also the ideal place for early settlers and immigrants to make corn whiskey after the Civil War. The clean cold stream that flows through the Caverns was perfect for “moonshine” and it is estimated that perhaps as many as 20 stills operated at one time!! An original still remains on display today complete with its story.
Deep under the now scenic beauty of West Virginia, the Smoke Hole Caverns provide visitors with a peek into the scenery below the surface. Caverns and the breathtaking beauty that fills them are created by the constant, trickling flow of mineral-carrying water that deposits the minerals making stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites are mineral formations that hang from the ceiling of a cavern, a stalagmite is a mineral formation formed on the floor. Each of these is generally cone-shaped.
For those who have never been into a cavern, Smoke Hole Caverns is a must visit. The bizarre-looking formations of minerals look like a scene from a lost world of an old science fiction movie. Bring a jacket as the caverns are a pleasant 56 degrees year round. A Sturdy pair of comfortable shoes is another recommendation. The tours through the caverns take a little less than an hour and will be pleasing for the entire family.
Bus groups and school groups are welcome. To reserve your group call between 9 and 5 at 800-828-8478 or fill out the Group Reservation Form.
Special meals can be catered on our veranda at the Smoke Hole Log Cabin Resort Property located just 2 miles from Smoke Hole Caverns. Here the kids and adults alike can relax a little easier as the veranda sits near our spring-fed fully stocked trout pond where the kids can feed the fish but yet the adults can still see and monitor the students from the veranda. This location is a good way to let the children release their energy before the trip back home. This also works well with groups that bring their own lunch.
A Smoke Hole Outfitter guide can be prearranged to give a short and informative spill on the different types of trout and their markings at the spring located adjacent to the pond and veranda. This is a free add-on to the trip and is very much similar to visiting a fish hatchery but better as the fish can be seen much more visibly.
Catered dinners at our lodge on the veranda at Smoke Hole Log Cabins can be set up for groups of 20 or more. Delicious deep fried turkey, barbequed country style ribs, seasoned steak, and cocktail shrimp dinners are available, to name a few. We can certainly cook up a mouthwatering meal where you will not leave hungry. Call us for prices at 800-828-8478.
Please Note: Groups must choose 1 option for the entire group (some exceptions may apply).
